Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
When winged girl Ivy and her fire-breathing Korgi pup Sprout find a strange piece of stained glass window, their curiosity over the shard's origins leads them to a library where they learn some surprising things about the history of Korgi Hollow. Together the two find the first Korgis were brought to their land by a kindly Magician, until they were kidnapped and sold to two wicked princes—who discover the blood of Korgi pups imbues them with fantastic powers. But when a friendly guard helps the Korgis escape, the princes' attempt to find the Korgis leads to a horrible magical explosion with far-reaching consequences that may affect Ivy and Sprout. While A Hollow Beginning is the third book in Slade's "Korgi" series, readers can easily follow the stand-alone plot—which like all "Korgi" books is told entirely through wordless pictures. Although Slade includes a helpful introduction and character glossary with texts that provide more background on the story, most readers will not even need these supplemental materials to appreciate the whimsical, exciting, and often eerie tale of Ivy and Sprout. It is a wonderful graphic novel that manages to cut across not only age but language barriers as well. "Korgi Book 3." Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD
