He was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 but returned to Russia in 1994 after the Soviet system had collapsed.

Лауреат Нобелевской премии по литературе (1970). Диссидент, в течение нескольких десятилетий (1960-е — 1980-е годы) активно выступавший против коммунистических идей, политического строя СССР и политики его властей. Помимо художественных литературных произведений, затрагивающих, как правило, острые общественно-политические вопросы, получил широкую известность своими историко-публицистическими произведениями по истории России XIX—XX веков.
