Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference of evidence-based medical nutrition therapy practices while supporting the nutrition care process as the standard for dietetics. This update is needed as new research and recommendations have emerged in various areas of dietetics since the last edition.
Audience: Dietetic students, nursing students, and other allied health professionals working in an interdisciplinary setting are the intended audience. While this book can be used as a teaching tool for students, it is also a valuable resource for practicing dietitians.
Features: The book's six parts cover nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis and intervention, nutrition in the life cycle, nutrition for health and fitness, medical nutrition therapy, and pediatric specialties. Not only does it outline protocols for clinical nutrition, it also provides clinical management algorithms, focus boxes with further insights, sample nutrition diagnoses for clinical scenarios, useful websites, and extensive appendixes for patient education. The tables and illustrations are particularly useful.
Assessment: This is the ultimate reference for dietetic professionals. It is comprehensive, well written, and addresses the newest emerging research and practice recommendations. I highly recommend this book to students as well as practicing dietitians. This update is justified, particularly because of the dietetic profession's move to the nutrition care process.
