As a Krav Maga student I have watched women in class successfully utilize the techniques in this book against men twice their size, thereby providing them with the confidence needed to defend themselves and not become the next victim or statistic. According to my female classmates, the key to Krav Maga’s success for them lies in its simplicity, effectiveness, and use of the human body’s natural inclinations under stress. This is exactly what this book provides all women, not just those enrolled in Krav Maga. Obviously, for those currently taking Krav Maga classes, the book serves as a great reference to hone and perfect the skills learned through personal instruction. Never seen the inside of a Krav Maga center, or had any formal self-defense training? Do not worry! This book provides step-by-step instruction (including pictures and narrative), beginning with the most basic forms of striking and escalating to various techniques to defend against the most common “worst case scenarios” encountered specifically by women. These scenarios include: defenses against unarmed attacks such as wrist/arm pulls and bear hugs; groundfighting (most struggles inevitably end up on the ground); using everyday objects as weapons; dealing with multiple attackers; defenses against edged weapons from the front and from behind; and also defenses against handgun threats. Women can feel confident in the techniques, scenarios, and training methodology provided, as the authors are world renowned experts in self-defense and hand-to-hand combat. To be honest this book is great tool for anyone, the fact that it is tailored specifically to women really makes it something special. In short, this book provides women with the skills to fight for their life, and get home safely.
“Krav Maga for Women” presents practical, no-nonsense self-defense techniques and strategies in a context and framework specifically for women. The self-defense techniques are explained thoroughly using step-by-step descriptions accompanied by a photo of each step. Clear definitions of the preferred target areas, immediate danger, secondary danger, and descriptions of helpful hints are an especially useful structure for presenting the material. Use of everyday objects as defensive weapons is an important concept, and I am thrilled that dealing with multiple attackers, gun threats, and knife threats are included in basic self-defense for women. At the very beginning, the book addresses the paradox of why a self-defense book for women is necessary when Krav Maga is designed for everyone. The explanation is clear and concise, outlining the physical, but in my opinion more importantly, the social differences that necessitate the book. The background section on "What is Krav Maga" identifies a point that female students often struggle with, "You must be trained and psychologically prepared to inflict damage on your attacker." Overcoming this socially instilled obstacle to self-preservation is a huge hurdle for many women, even when faced with the realization that an attack is not "fair." These concepts are further reinforced in the discussions concerning the use of force. The section "Surviving the Encounter" is a critical section of the book. Taking the reader through the process of an assailant selecting someone to victimize is important to overcoming the psychological struggle of inflicting damage on the attacker. In his book "Meditations on Violence," Sgt. Rory Miller makes the point that a predator always knows the attack is going to happen before it occurs (if only seconds) and that the attack is "only sudden to the defender...Attacks happen closer, faster, more suddenly, and with more power than most people believe." The discussion of the survival mindset, awareness, boundaries, body language and verbalization sets the framework for a holistic approach to self-defense. I have been teaching self-defense as a Krav Maga instructor for several years, and I have volunteered my time and skills in dozens of seminars for women who have experienced violence. This book is an important reference and guide for teaching women how to defend themselves in the case of a violent encounter, and I highly recommend it. Jennifer Alvarez Krav Maga Instructor
