Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Ms. Gray-Kanatiiosh presents a nice introduction to the Kumeyaay, a native American tribe once located in southern California. Each section of the book presents two, nicely illustrated pages that describe the Kumeyaay's homes, clothing, family, traditions, and history. The book also introduces a significant, current leader of the tribe and the tribe's current situation of living on reservations in Mexico and California. The illustrations and photographs complement the text with extra details and brief additional notes. Words that might be a bit difficult to understand are in bold and are listed in a glossary at the end of the book. Also at the end of the book is a list of additional web sites and a brief index—the current web site for the tribe could have been listed again in addition to the publisher's site. This minor quibble aside, this book can serve very well early elementary social studies classes studying Native American history, particularly students in southern California. For any reader, the book provides factual material presented in an inviting way for younger audiences.
