Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
How could a pudgy panda named Po become the legendary Dragon Warrior? It is a challenge that master Shifu feels is beyond his ability. How can he train this pudgy panda to become a true fighting machine. When Po is asked to show his stuff, he is overcome by a stuffed dummy and made to look like a fool. It is only when he seeks food that he shows his agility. Master Shifu decides to use Po's love of food as the "carrot" in his training exercises. It works, and Po learns the skills needed to become a great warrior. This story is amusing, and food is used to train animals, but the message is a bit mixed. Food seems to be the focus rather than the message near the end of the book, which notes "Po had a Dragon Warrior inside himself after all. He just needed to believe in himself." That is really the important lesson. This book is a movie spinoff, and the illustrations appear to be taken from the it and set in the new backgrounds on the pages. It will probably have more appeal to those who have seen the film. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
