Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Part of the publisher's "Blazers" series (other martial arts titles include Jujitsu, Kendo, Muay Thai, and Tae Kwon Do) this book opens with an account of some of the mystery surrounding the origins of kung fu and its connection to the Shaolin monks of China. The legendary monk Bodhidharma is said to have visited the famous Shaolin Temple and taught the monks this martial arts tradition, in order that they could protect the temple from thieves. The brief chapters in the book address uniforms, moves, the role of the sifu or teacher, and the various styles that are named for animals. Other topics covered include colors and ranks, competitions, and the high-action moves of kung fu in movies. Martial arts facts that are included throughout address related practices and traditions, kung fu practice with sword and staff, and variations in uniforms. A two-page spread is occupied by a labeled photograph of a practitioner doing a high front kick, although there is not much of substance that is actually labeled in the picture. A final spread shows a photograph of a kung fu takedown. A few terms are defined on the pages in which they occur: monk, sifu, sash. In addition, back matter consists of a glossary, brief list of additional readings, a link to the FactHound Internet site, and an index. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
