Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Second grader Gordon Blue (a chicken) is the main character is this tale, which combines the customary book form with the format of a comic book. It is the fourth title in a series called “Kung Pow Chicken” whose premise is encouraging beginning readers to read independently. The plot centers on the chicken-napping of famed opera star Honey Comb. While performing in their hometown of Fowladelphia, famed scientist, Dr. Screech plucks Honey Comb from the stage via a huge metal hook. Like Superman, Gordon can be transformed into a super hero named Kung Pow Chicken by changing into a costume he keeps in his ever present lunchbox. After many harrowing events, Kung Pow, with the help of his brother Benny, who becomes his sidekick Egg Drop, the boys manage to rescue Honey Comb. A side plot concerns newspaper reporter, Sam Snood who is offering a reward to anyone who can disclose the identity of our hero and his companion. Moving quickly and often humorously from scene to scene and with dialogue in circles above the heads of the characters, young readers are sure to be entertained. The quirky, comic book style illustrations fit well with the text. As there is always a need for books to assist young readers, put this title on the primary purchase list. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth; Ages 6 to 8.

Gr 2–5—In this second book of the series, superhero chicken, Gordon Bleu, and his little brother Benny (still partially in his super-strength shell) come to the aid of Miss Honey Comb, a well-loved opera singer in Fowladelphia when she is chicknapped by the evil Dr. Screech. Dr. Screech plans to use her super-loud voice and his megaphone to shake the city to bits. Gordon Bleu and Benny save Miss Honey Comb and Fowladelphia and make it home by dinnertime. Full-color comic-style illustrations with short blocks of text may help readers transition from beginning chapter books to traditional chapter books. Many jokes and puns will keep the attention of eager new readers looking for a fast-paced, funny adventure with unlikely superheroes.—Lindsay Persohn, University of South Florida, Tampa
