Kursk 1943: A Statistical Analysis makes extensive use of hitherto unused German archival documents, as well as up-to-date Russian books and sources, many of which were published following the fall of communism in 1990. By using such sources, the authors can attempt to answer such important questions about the battle as what forces were actually engaged, how they were equipped, what their casualties were, and what the cost of the battle was. While answers to these questions have not been lacking hitherto, the authors' new research has shown many of these to be dubious.

    a battle of kursk factbook

Niklas Zetterling has written a very lucid and persuasive study on facts about the battle of kursk based on russian data for soviet and on german data on wehrmacht troop strenght and casualities. He presents a wealth of data on the wehrmacht that is not easily accessible elsewhere and he shows the battle as one episode of a gruel war of attrition between the wehrmacht and soviet troops which, according to his (wehrmacht based - and here lurks a problem of its own) data, the wehrmacht was not sure to loose up to 1944. The text lost the fifth star for the rather barren and very short narrative of the battle itself which is a very far cry from thucydides or shelby foote. therefore I recomend the use of a companion text like david glantz's book on kursk.
