In this vivid conclusion to the second Kushiel trilogy (after 2007's Kushiel's Justice), young Prince Imriel and his beloved, Sidonie, heir to the Terre D'Ange throne, struggle to come to terms with the deaths of Imriel's wife and unborn son. Queen Ysandre threatens to forbid Imriel's marriage to Sidonie unless he hunts down his traitorous mother, Melisande. Then a spell convinces everyone in Terre D'Ange's capital that Sidonie loves the prince of Carthage, and she sails off to wed him. Only Imriel remembers their romance. He must evade deluded loved ones and work with erstwhile enemies to rescue Sidonie and pull the country back from the brink of war. Carey delivers a heady mix of adventure, power struggles and romance, but fans of the first Kushiel trilogy may be disappointed by the few appearances of Phèdre, Imriel's adoptive mother, and by the relatively tame sexuality, which serves more as a spice than a larger theme. All rights reserved. Now that he has fulfilled his vow to avenge the death of his wife and unborn son, Imriel nó Montrév de la Courcel returns to Terre d'Ange to be with his true love, Sidonie, the daughter and heir of Queen Ysandre. Despite his determination to be faithful to the will of the god Elua, whose "love as thou wilt" he denied in order to quell the rumors that he coveted the throne of Terre d'Ange like his traitorous mother, Imriel finds that major obstacles lie in the path of his desire to wed Sidonie. To prove his loyalty, he agrees to undertake a dangerous journey to find his fugitive mother and bring her to justice. With unexpected plot twists, Carey concludes her second trilogy (Kushiel's Scion; Kushiel's Justice), set in an alternate Renaissance world of subtle yet powerful magic. Sensual prose and graphic eroticism make this fantasy saga particularly appealing to fans of Terry Goodkind and Storm Constantine. Highly recommended. [See Prepub Alert, LJ3/1/08.]

Without a doubt, this is like losing some dear friends. This is the last book of a trilogy, and I know that whatever I read after this will surely pale. Jacqueline Carey has brought an old world to life, with characters that you actually care about. Imreil de la Courcel took up where Jocelyn and Phedre left off, and in an amazingly gripping style. The imagination just cannot come close to this tale. I read each of the books, from Kushiel's Dart...to this almost in a single reading. Since the middle of the summer. Love, war, and true love winning out with grace and dignity. I am so touched by this, that I really hope there will be more to come from this.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This is the sixth book in a series; if you're new to Carey or the Kushiel books--do not start here. Go back and start with Kushiel's Dart--I definitely think you'd lose a lot if you don't. Although I don't quite love this second trilogy centered on Imri as much as the first three with Phedre, which I found more moving, I still found "Kushiel's Mercy" an entrancing read. The ending disappointed me a bit--it seemed a bit facile, but truly it's a minor complaint given the pleasure this book gave me, and certainly the spell all in the land become entangled in and its unraveling is imaginative and resonates like the curse from a fairy tale.

Her books ring true on so many different levels and still have a fantastical twist that allows for an escape from your everyday experience. I started reading these books after hearing a recommendation from a friend years ago. I finished this particular book (The end to Imriel's story) awhile back but constantly find myself thinking about this story. These books are wonderfully written.
There is something for everyone. I think that people have a hard time believing that books usually categorized as fantasy can be so diverse, but these are. There is romance, magic, intrigue, political incentives, religious aspects, action, and more. You cannot imagine the kind of plots and intertwining tales Carey weaves.
Kushiel's Dart, Chosen, and Avatar follow Phedre, Imriel's adoptive mother. Kushiel's Mercy, along with Scion and Justice, follow Imriel on his journey to find himself and love. This particular book will make you sit up on the edge of your seat, smile, wince in nervous fear, and even cry. It is heartwrenching, romantic, and deeply complex. You feel for the characters and find yourself absorbed in their lives. Besides the romance between Imriel and Sidonie, there is Carey's unique blend of themes, which make this more than a fantasy lite story for girls alone.
Despite the fantasy setting, these characters have qualities that make you feel like you know them. They have qualities of people around you. And still, you find yourself wishing you knew people like this. The entire Kushiel Legacy series is brilliantly executed, and this book is no exception. It is the perfect ending to Imriel's story.

It was more romantic than the books i generally read (bought for me by a friend), but I still managed to love it. It had action, required thought (I didn't know exactly what was going to happen after the first few chapters-unusual for me), and held my attention all through the night. Would suggest this book, but only for an adult crowd.

The whole series is well done and thought out. It deserves a good rating. That said, I am still waiting for nook books to become cheaper than the hardcover books for items that have been out for awhile.

This is the final installment and it delivers. Don't interfere with Elua. Loved it!
Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This book did not let me down. I loved all the other books in this series and I love this one too! It made me sit on the edge of my seat and want to read faster, but at the same time I didn't want to read to fast cause then it would be all read and I wanted to savor it. It was massively thrilling and a definite nail bitter in spots! I laughed and I cried, I was scared and excited, really happy and really sad. This book made me lose all track of time and I never wanted to put it down. I read this book in two days and was half tempted to reread it then but I had more new books to read. I really wished I had the next book in the series to start on immediately, but alas I didn't. I would definitely recommend this to my friends.

The trials and tribulations that Imriel has to go through to prove to his detractors that he really does love Sidonie moves this story right along. Sad that this is the last book in the series, but i'm looking forward to reading Naamah's Kiss. I would highly recommend the entire series. Just be forwarned the first three books are not for the faint of heart.

In the last book of this trilogy Carey really outdid herself combining unending love with dangerous plots and vile enemies. Carey does not create characters, she embodies human nature. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the past few Kushiel books. You will not be disappointed.

Kushiel's Mercy, stitched everything together. It made everything that happened before make so much sense. The trial of love that Emri holds to makes each choice seem so much more dire if he makes the wrong one. War makes everything just as riveting as the first book. The realizations throughout made it even more emotional. But it focused on all aspects of a life. Now I feel like I have to read them all over again, until Jacqueline comes out with something else!!!!!!!

This is the strangest of all the Kushiel's books. I loved all of them until I got to this one. Imri seems to be a more shallow character than in previous books. Not as passionate. Not sure what Carey was thinking on this one. She could've done a much better job. But if you love the series, read it. It's nice to have a conclusion to the tale. I hope she writes more!

Just an amazing author with such a beautiful writing style, I find myself skipping meals and calling out sick to work just to stay curled up with her books! Kushiel's Mercy is a climatic conclusion to her Imerial trilogy, and I'm only terrified that there won't be more (please let there be more Terre D'Ange stoires!). Her books are bold and epic and unapologetically erotic and at the same time romantic and heart touching. Just when you think the dust has settled, the author yanks the carpet out and another adventure takes off. And it's true: Happiness is the height of wisdom. If I can craft my own version of heaven when I die, it will resemble Jacqueline Carey's Terre D'Ange.

Wonderful conclusion to Imriel's Story. Even better than some of the earlier books. Something for everyone, war, intrigue, magic, love, tears, laughter. I couldn't put it down.

Overview
From Jacqueline Carey, New York Times bestselling author of Kushiel's Scion and Kushiel's Justice, comes the final adventure in the Imriel Trilogy.Having paid dearly for ignoring Elua's edict to love as thou wilt, Imriel and Sidonie have finally come forward to publicly confess their love for each other---only to watch the news ignite turmoil throughout the land. Those who are old enough cannot forget the misdeeds of Imriel's mother, Melisande, whose self-serving lies plunged their country into war.
In order to quell the uprising, Queen Ysandre hands down a decree: she will not divide the lovers, but neither will she ...
