Kwanzaa!: Africa Lives in a New World Festival

Editorial Reviews

Author Sule Greg C. Wilson gives readers a well-researched and informative book about the celebration of Kwanzaa, its origin and the overall purpose of this wonderful seven-day event. Wilson presents a resource, rich with information, that will appeal to readers of all ages, but definitely targets the elementary school independent reader in its format and presentation. Children will read about some of the significant periods in history, such as slavery and segregation, to gain a better understanding of people of African descent, their traditions, and culture, as well as learn how Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa.

The author's even presention of facts is peppered with energy, easy to read, and very comprehensible. I did enjoy the author's approach describing components of the Kwanzaa ceremony; for instance, as he explains the seven principles of Kwanzaa, Wilson shares stories from ancient Africa to aid in making the concepts more concrete. He also shares fun rhymes to teach the KiSwahili terms (I only wish that he had included phonetic pronunciations). This factor does not, however, outweigh the positive and wonderful information of this resource. I was also glad to see that the author included Web sites, a bibliography for further reading, and research facilities that will aid in expanding one's knowledge of Kwanzaa and African American culture. Anyone who reads this book will gain a better understanding of the Kwanzaa celebration, a better understanding of the African American culture, and a better understanding of themselves.
