Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rosa Roberts
What fairy tale would be complete without a moral for young readers? In this Spanish text, the unselfish, beautiful, and compassionate daughter sacrifices her own well-being and in return marries a handsome prince who was formerly a beast. The other two sisters are so jealous they are turned into statues to guard the castle where the compassionate daughter now lives happily ever after with the prince. The illustrations are basic for the complex text on the pages. The resolution provides a lesson for readers who see that happiness comes to those individuals who are kind, generous, and humble in their lives. As a read aloud, readers can discuss choices between right versus wrong and the benefits of self-sacrifice. The selection is from the "Read It! Readers" green series, which includes more multifaceted ideas, diverse vocabulary, and wide-ranging vocabulary. This story is found in the "Accelerated Reader" selections with the availability of a quiz for readers.
