In a long overdue poetic reflection of the legacy of the Chicano Movement, Gregg Barrios has written another chapter in Chicano poetry. Refusing to give up on Aztlan, yet cognizant of the many contradictions in Chicano Movement politics, he instead balances the two through simultaneous reflections and refractions backward and forward and from his place in the present. "La Causa"-the phrase that invokes mass marches, celebrations and shootouts-becomes a palimpsest as it is continually written upon and over and beyond like a taco of refried beans that tastes better each time you reheat it.

La Causa is a chronicle of the changes made in the aftermath of the Chicano Mexican American civil rights movement. Many of the poems have never been published and will permit a wider audience to know Barrios' work.
