About the Author

Rafael A. Osuba (b. 1967) is a visual artist, cultural producer, and storyteller. He's passionate about sharing memories and tales from his beloved Puerto Rico. Growing up in Barrio La Mineral in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, he often draws inspiration for his stories from those cherished childhood experiences in Borikén. "The illustrations are my humble attempt at a unique linocut style. They are a nod to the influential Puerto Rican government posters and books (Libros para el Pueblo) of DIVEDCO (1950s-60s)-including works by artists like Rafael Tufiño and Lorenzo Homar, whom I respect and admire dearly-and also to the classic fairy tale books I enjoyed as a child." Osuba believes it's essential to teach children the value of preserving culture and highlighting the daily beauty and positivity around us. He strongly advocates for children seeing themselves represented in the books they read, regardless of their cultural, ethnic, or socioeconomic background. For him, bilingual and bicultural children's books are crucial; they help children understand their own culture and ancestral origins, whether living in their native country or abroad.Osuba has three adult children: Raffi, Gabbi, and Leilani. He lives in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, best friend, and muse, Michelle.
