Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrick Hunter
Learn the basics of pumpkin harvesting in both English and Spanish. Text is easy to read, with English at the top of each page and the Spanish version at the bottom. Large pictures complement the text, giving some association to what is happening. The page containing the wording, "Farmers cut the ripe pumpkins," is illustrated with a man dressed in flannel and jeans carrying two pumpkins. The title, table of contents, and the glossary are bilingual. A drawback of the glossary is that although the English and Spanish words are listed on opposite pages, they are not in the same order. They are alphabetical with respect to their language. The reader cannot assume that the word listed third on the English glossary page is the same word in the same position on the Spanish glossary page. Glossary words also are not highlighted in any way in the text, which is another drawback. A way to search for Internet sites is included in the back through the portal facthound.com. Readers must enter a 13-digit code to have the site "retrieve" related Web sites, which might not necessarily correspond to the book but may be more general in nature. The suggested related Web sites are also in English only, instead of being bilingual. Despite these problems, the book, which is part of the "Todo acerca del otono/All About Fall" series is a good resource for Spanish speakers, bilingual readers, or English-speaking readers who want to learn Spanish.
