A decade after resorting to starting her own label to release her work, Teena Marie discovered newfound -- or, more likely, regenerated -- respect for her legacy and wound up with a deal on Southern rap label Cash Money distributed by Universal. Most of La Doña was in the can before the label snapped her up, but not before Cash Money's own Mannie Fresh could contribute some co-production work. Even so, this is a Teena Marie record in every respect, with none of her personality compromised. The average artist who reappears long after his or her most-popular years tends to fail miserably at staying current -- hell, rewind 14 years to the stunted hip-hop elements of Marie's own Ivory -- but she skillfully avoids that trap here. She's in excellent voice, as confident as ever, and most of the material she's working with stands proudly next to her best work. One trap Marie couldn't help but fall down, however, is the curse of the seemingly bottomless album. Equal to the length of two of her '80s albums, it undeniably falls prey to the CD-age trend of cramming as much as possible onto a disc. And La Doña would most definitely have a greater impact if it were knocked down to 40 minutes or so. This issue excepted, Marie's return is nothing short of welcomed. Gerald LeVert, MC Lyte, Common, Baby, and -- of course -- Rick James stop by for support, but none of them are truly needed.
Billboard
Already, the set's lead single, "I'm Still in Love," has reintroduced the artist to an audience starving for sophisticated soul. La Doña will not disappoint those that have responded to that song's retro vibe.

    LOVE IT!

I'M SORRY I DID NOT BUY THE CD WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. I CAN'T STOP PLAYING "I'M ON FIRE" AND "MY BODY'S HUNGRY". THESE TWO SONGS ARE RIGHT UP THERE WITH "OUT ON A LIMB, DEAR LOVER, CASANOVA BROWN". TEENA CAN REALLY MAKE YOU FEEL THE MUSIC. SHE IS A TRUE ARTIST IN EVERY SINCE. KEEP IT COMING TEENA.

Original Ivory Soul Sister is Baaack!

Lady T is back in full effect. Stepped out a minute but she's back to the game without missing a beat. Just goes to show you quality lasts forever. She is now and always will be one of my favorites. Her range is incredible and her pipes still sound fantastic. Thank you Lady Tee, your fans really missed you. She is an OG for sure. She is not just a great singer, but a great stylist. The girl can saaaaang.

    Tastefully Sexy

From the classy sassy cover photos to such romantic seductive songs as "I'm On Fire", "Honey Call", and "My Body's Hungry", LADONA offers ample proof that you can be sexy with class. Old school influences are on display on such songs as "Still In Love" (Al Green), "Baby I'm Your Fiend" (Roy Ayers), and "Black Rain" (mid 70s Dee Dee Bridgewater). On the romantic "A Rose By Any Other Name", Marie and Gerald Levert get down to the business of "sanging", while guest appearances by Rick James, De De O'Neal, and Alia Rose (Teena's daughter) enhance the album without overpowering Lady Tee. In fact, the guests honor Lady Tee by putting in their contribution, before stepping back and letting her do her thing. The only stumbles on this album is the loud reggae-flavored "Recyle Hate To Love" and the sloppy hip-hop track "The Mackin' Game" featuring rappers Medusa and MC Lyte. The latter track is weak not because of the rappers, but the overall production of the song.

    Teena Marie is definately back!!!

I have always loved Teena Marie since I first heard "I'm Just A Sucker For Your Love" w/Rick James. This cd just shows that she only gets better as the years go by and you cannot say that about too many artists. If you were to listen to "Starchild" or "Robbery" she sounds exactly the way she did so this cd definately shows that she is not outdated, played out, and can definately meet up to current times. Her voice blends perfectly. I hope she wins a grammy finally.
