Edith Wharton nació en Nueva York en 1862, en el seno de una familia acomodada. Educada con institutrices, abundantes lecturas y viajes al extranjero, se casó en 1885, y en 1902 publicó su primera novela,
The valley of decision, tras la que no dejaría de escribir hasta su muerte en 1937. Vivió en París a partir de 1907, donde acabaría estableciéndose. Durante la primera guerra mundial asumió arriesgadas tareas de ayuda a los aliados, por las que recibió, en 1915, la Legión de Honor. Reconocida en vida como la heredera de Henry James, Edith Wharton es hoy considerada como una de las grandes novelistas de la literatura norteamericana, autora de grandes títulos, entre sus cuarenta y seis libros de ensayo y ficción, como

Edith Wharton was born in New York in 1862 to a well-to-do family. Educated by governesses, reading extensively, and traveling abroad, she married in 1885, and in 1902 published her first novel,
The Valley of Decision, after which she would not stop writing until her death in 1937. He lived in Paris from 1907, where he eventually settled. During the First World War he took on risky tasks to help the Allies, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1915. Recognized during her lifetime as the heiress of Henry James, Edith Wharton is today considered one of the great novelists of American literature, author of great titles, among her forty-six books of essays and fiction, such as
