Overview

Born to a privileged minority in the early 20th century, Oscar Fairfax’s life develops smoothly, from the prestigious St. Augustine boarding school, to Yale University, Paris, Washington, and New York, where he works as a lawyer at his father’s firm. But Oscar begins to realize that education is a life-long endeavor and that that traditional values he was raised with are not very compatible with the modern world. This novel showcases some of Auchincloss’s favorite themes: New York high society, big law firms, the world of finance, and the weaknesses of those who inhabit those spaces.
