Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rebecca Moore
Georges Saphir wants nothing more from life than never to be hurt or disliked by anyone-never to be like his father. And he is not. Everyone at his European Catholic boys' school loves him because he is kind, gentle, devout, and intelligent-positively angelic. So when new and rebellious student Robert whispers, "I hate people like you," and sets out to "rip off his mask," Georges is utterly thrown off balance. Thus begins a charged and thorny battle of perception, repulsion, and attraction, as Robert both sees through Georges-better than Georges sees himself-to Georges' confusion and anguish, and he finds Georges' spirit genuine. What in Robert's shady past so draws him to Georges' purity? Will Georges heed the warnings that Robert is Bad News? Perhaps he will in the next volume. This book is Japanese "boy-love" manga and features many of its usual trappings: indistinguishably beautiful characters, near-falls from high windows, and enough teen angst to sink a soap opera. It is also completely enthralling. Particularly strong are Kawai's multilayered and compelling characters. Their fragmented, real-time realizations reveal their depths, facet by tantalizing facet, with observations at once keen, poignant, subtle, unexpected, and deceptively simple. The school setting also works, as the disjointed splashing of text and illustration brings it to realistically chaotic life. Although marketed as homoerotic yaoi, the first volume at least contains only one kiss, which is later laughed off-if not forgotten. Fans of angsty, unsettling boy-love manga will be panting for the next volume.
