Children's LiteratureShould someone reap the benefits of another's hard work? In the case of this wonderfully woven story, certainly not, and perhaps young readers will learn from the theme. Sharing is caring, but one must also assist in the process. This yellow level book in the "Read It! Readers" series presents that specific dilemma involving a cat, a dog, and a mouse. All three of them live with little red hen in a home but are not willing to assist in the day to day chores of running a household. It is not until the little red hen decides to make bread that the indolent roommates realize they will not be able to enjoy the fresh warm baked bread. After all, the little red hen found the wheat, planted it, cut it, and then made the flour, while they all refused to lend a hand. The illustrations are whimsical yet friendly for young readers. 2006, Picture Window Books, Ages 4 to 9.
