Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This Spanish young adult nonfiction account is intended to be read by high school readers. The simplistic sentence structure, vocabulary, and short chapters make it trouble-free reading for adolescents. In this narrative account, Jenna Bush spent six months as intern with UNICEF and met Ana, a 17-year-old HIV-infected female. In this poignant story, Ana does not recall knowing her mother and her earliest recollection was at the age of 3 in finding out her little sister died at two months of age. Despite being born HIV positive, Ana tries to make the best out of her day-to-day childhood. She is raised by an abusive grandmother and molested by her grandmother's boyfriend. She tries to shield her youngest sister from the abuse but fails to do so. Even though it seems to be a disheartening account for young readers, Ana's compelling story chronicles the trials and tribulations in a manner to open dialogue for adolescents about the topics of abuse, HIV, poverty, and resiliency.
