En la isla han aparecido otros seres humanos. Se oyen voces, canciones, aparecen y desaparecen personas. El los observa, los espía, sigue sus pasos, procura sorprender sus conversaciones. Y de aquí arranca el misterio, la alternancia entre alucinación y realidad, que le lleva a enamorarse de una mujer cuya existencia es dudosa. Cuando por fin logre descifrar el enigma, ideará también la forma de permanecer para siempre junto a su amada.

Este libro tiene el derecho de compararse con las historias más logradas de Edgar Allan Poe.
