Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rosa Roberts
Young Spanish readers of the "Read It! Readers" series will become familiar with the well-known Aesop's fable of the race between the tortoise and the hare. This series is the yellow level from the six levels, which provides higher ideas, extensive vocabulary, and varied sentence structure. The themes of perseverance and underestimating the opponent can be discussed with a child. Young readers can be asked to make predictions of who will win the race before beginning the reading of the selection. Afterward, a written or oral discussion on the tortoise winning will enable readers to draw conclusions on its successful endeavor. The main limitations of this text are the illustrations, which seem too simplistic for the written sentences. The watercolor drawings do not go beyond what a child could probably draw in depicting the story. An Accelerated Reader quiz is available for library and classroom use.
