La Luna [B&N Exclusive Version]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Cohen
After conquering the disparate worlds of pop, musical theater, and opera, Sarah Brightman looks heavenward on La Luna. Enamored of the mysteries of the moon and inspired by the many composers and poets who have been similarly enchanted, the British soprano and her trusted producer, Frank Peterson, have crafted a stunning song cycle. The former Phantom of the Opera star effortlessly segues between works by immortal classical composers such as Beethoven "Figlio Perduto", Rachmaninov "How Fair This Spot", Handel "Solo con Te", and Dvorák "La Luna"; songs by contemporary writers such as Ennio Morricone "La Califfa" and J. M. Cano "Hijo de la Luna"; and traditional folk tunes...

M. Cano "Hijo de la Luna"; and traditional folk tunes like "Scarborough Fair." This album proves that Brightman can sing just about anything: Her amethyst-clear voice adds an equally luminous shine to the trip-hop ballad "This Love," the soaring yet danceable "Here with Me," and a late-night take on Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." With the artistic triumph of La Luna, Brightman becomes a celestial songstress for the ages. This special edition, exclusive to Barnes & Noble, includes the bonus track "Heaven is Here," not previously available in the United States.
All Music Guide - Bryan Buss
Broadway star Sarah Brightman lends her ethereal, angelic vocals to another combination of classical and pop, resulting in a solid, stirring collection. This outing, the ex-Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Webber adapts Rachmaninov "How Fare This Spot", Beethoven "Figlio Perduto", and Handel "Solo Con Te" alongside the brothers Gibb and Simon and Garfunkel. The uncanny thing is how canny Brightman is at bridging the contemporary with the classics so that they seem timeless. She brings touches of adult contemporary, rock, and even, surprisingly enough, techno to the mix; some of these songs, "Here With Me" in particular, are crying out to be remixed as dance songs. Her crystalline soprano leads you on a sentimental journey through "Scarborough Fair" then lilts through a playful "Hijo de la Luna" without missing a beat. Especially successful is the last track, "First of May," as it was recorded live in South Africa. It shows that Brightman's talent doesn't need the production so many contemporary vocalists need to sound phenomenal. There is something melancholy in her expressive voice and in the production of each song on this album, so that even if you don't understand the language of the lyrics, you're left feeling a bit nostalgic, and the effect is not that of much of the plastic A/C market but one of genuine emotion. She doesn't manipulate you into feeling; she actually moves you. Overall, this album achieves some beautiful highs without being over the top.

Enough is enough, Sarah, I got this CD!

I don't know how it came through my head that I HAD to get a copy of the new Sarah Brightman CD ''La Luna,'' but I did just to get this promotion thing to stop bugging me. I got this version with ''Heaven Is Here.'' In my opinion, this is the La Luna to get. I would say that ''La Lune,'' in spite of some spectacular sound effects, is not THAT great, but ''He Doesn't See Me,'' ''Here With Me,'' ''Winter In July,'' ''Hijo De La Luna,'' the title track, and in particular ''A Whiter Shade of Pale'' (it's the best on the CD!) are. Some of the others aren't my favorites, either. Okay, but I prefer to like ''Fly,'' ''Time To Say Goodbye,'' and ''Eden'' better than this. Oh, and I know what the bonus track is. It's ''Moon River.''

    ANOTHER STAR FOR SARAH

Have you noticed? Whenever Sarah brightman covers a song she always does it better, case in point being the spectacular track ''EDEN'' from her previous CD, previously recorded by Hooverphonic. There are many incredible covers on this recording such as Dido's ''HERE WITH ME''(she adds an incredible string orchestra) & Craig Armstrong's ''THIS LOVE'' she definitely equals each song in greatness, if not surpasses it. The track ''LA CALIFFA'' is another Ennio Morricone arrangement from the film ''Cinema Paradiso'', it is stunning. After great difficulty (in obtaining copyright permission) Sarah recorded an Ennio Morricone piece for her album ''EDEN'', he undoubtedly must have loved it as he let her do it once again. ''LA LUNA'' flows beautifully from beginning to end. On the song ''He Does Not See Me'' Sarah sounds a bit like Kate Bush. The final track ''Heaven is Here'' is actually from an equally spectacular previous recording titled FLY, one should definitely pick this up also. Sarah is a mercurial recording artist and I love every soundscape she has conquered.

LaLuna is terriffic and has broad appeal

This is a great CD! More contemporary music than her Eden CD yet still showcasing and preserving the remarkable beauty of her voice. The music is varied enough that my teenage daughter, a huge fan and a singer who emulates Sarah's style, says that even kids will like it! We can't wait to see her in person later this month!

    Another Medodic Offering from Sarah

Sarah Brightman has done it again. Another CD containing some very listenable and also some very beautiful music. Although I don't go much for the eerie, ethereal sounds and the little-girl voice on some selections, I have to give her so much credit for bringing melodic music back into the popular realm. All the songs based on classical themes are lovely, and beautifully sung by her. Also welcome is ''La Califfa'', a wonderful theme by the great Italian film composer, Ennio Morricone. And ''Hijo de la Luna'' -- great! Keep it up, Sarah! We need artists like you to somehow neutralize the deleterious effect that rock and rap have inflicted on the popular music scene for so many years. RC

    WONDERFUL!!!

An absolutely beautiful album! The outstanding tracks are Whiter Shade of Pale, Gloomy Sunday, and above all, First of May. One puzzling note: After the bonus track that is First of May, Sarah sings Moon River. This track is not listed on the album, or in the liner notes. There is no indication that this track is on the album, until one gets to the end, and there it is. If anyone has any information about this, fans may want to know...
