Lovers of biblical stories and radionovelas ("radio soap operas")will enjoy this version of best-selling author Coelho's classic tale. In a soothing tone and soft Caribbean accent, the narrator describes prophet Elijah's adventures as he obeys God's orders, saves Israel from a malign, heretic queen, and faces God's anger. But when it comes to the dialogs in the book, the narration becomes distracting. A handful of voices speak for the different characters: angels, priests, warriors, women, kids, God, Elijah. The quality of the recording is impeccable-especially the sound effects and background musicDbut a neutral accent would have been a better choice for the characters, especially for Elijah and God. Moreover, the actors' exaggerated crying and desperate screams sound more like they belong in a telenovela than a biblical story. Coelho fans and genre lovers will enjoy this entertaining and accurate reading of the author's respectful vision of this biblical passage. Paulo Coelho
Brazilian author Paulo Coelho broke sacred ground -- and crossed over into worldwide fame as an author -- with his symbolic masterpiece, The Alchemist. Since then, Coelho has dedicated his work to the ideal of helping people to follow their wildest dreams.

Biography

His books have been translated into 56 languages, topped bestseller lists throughout the world, and scored him such celebrity fans as Julia Roberts, Bill Clinton, and Madonna; yet for Brazilian publishing phenom Paulo Colho, the road to success has been strewn with a number of obstacles, many of them rooted in his troubled past.

As a youth, Coelho was expected to follow in the footsteps of his father, a professional engineer. When he rebelled, expressing his intentions to become a writer, his parents had him committed to a psychiatric hospital where he was subjected to electro-shock therapy. He left home to join the 1970s countercultural revolution, experimenting with drugs, dabbling in black magic, and getting involved in Brazil's bohemian art and music scene. He teamed with rock musician Raul Seixas for an extremely successful songwriting partnership that changed the face of Brazilian pop -- and put a lot of money in Coelho's pockets. He also joined an anti-capitalist organization called the Alternative Society which attracted the attention of Brazil's military dictatorship. Marked down as a subversive, he was imprisoned and tortured.

Amazingly, Coelho survived these horrific experiences. He left the hippie lifestyle behind, went to work in the record industry, and began to write, but without much success. Then, in the mid-1980s, during a trip to Europe, he met a man, an unnamed mentor he refers to only as "J," who inducted him into Regnum Agnus Mundi, a secret society that blends Catholicism with a sort of New Age mysticism. At J's urging, Coelho journeyed across el Camino de Santiago, the legendary Spanish road traversed by pilgrims since the Middle Ages. He chronicled this life-changing, 500-mile journey -- the culmination of decades of soul-searching -- in The Pilgrimage, published in 1987.

The following year, Coelho wrote The Alchemist, the inspirational fable for which he is best known. The first edition sold so poorly the publisher decided not to reprint it. Undaunted, Coelho moved to a larger publishing house that seemed more interested in his work. When his third novel (1990's Brida) proved successful, the resulting media buzz carried The Alchemist all the way to the top of the charts. Released in the U.S. by HarperCollins in 1993, The Alchemist became a word-of-mouth sensation, turning Coelho into a cult hero.

Since then, he has gone on to create his own distinct literary brand -- an amalgam of allegory and self-help filled with spiritual themes and symbols. In his novels, memoirs, and aphoristic nonfiction, he returns time and again to the concepts of quest and transformation and has often said that writing has helped connect him to his soul. While his books have not always been reviewed favorably and have often become the subject of strong cultural and philosophical debate, there is no doubt that this self-described "pilgrim writer" has struck a chord in readers everywhere. In the 2009 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records, Coelho was named the most translated living author -- with William Shakespeare the most translated of all time!

—-Dios es Dios—-respondió el levita. Él no le dijo a Moisés si era bueno o malo. Se limitó a decir: Yo soy. Por lo tanto,Él es todo lo que existe bajo el sol: el rayo que destruye la casa y la mano del hombre que la reconstruye.

La conversación era la única manera de alejar el miedo; en cualquier momento, los soldados abríran la puerta del establo donde se encontraban, los descubrirían y les ofrecerían la única elección posible: adorar a Baal —-eI dios fenicio—- o ser ejecutados. —-No lo sé—- respondió el levita—-, pero tiene que existir una razón, y espero conocerla en breve.

—-Entonces, ¿no tienes respuesta para esta pregunta?

—-No, no tengo.

Los dos quedaron en silencio. Elias tenía un sudor frio.

Está aterrorizado, pero yo ya acepté mi destino —-comentó el levita—-. Voy a safir para acabar con esta agonía. Cada vez que oigo un grito allí fuera, sufro imaginando, cómo será cuando Ilegue mi hora. Mientras hemos estado encerrados aquí ya he muerto un centenar de veces, cuando podía haber muerto sóo una. Ya que voy a ser degollado, que sea lo más rápido posible.

Él tenía razón. Elías había escuchado los mismos gritos, y ya había sufrido más allá de su capacidad de resistencia.

—-Me voy contigo. Estoy cansado de luchar por algunas horas más de vida.

Se levantó y abrió la puerta del establo, dejando que el sol entrase y mostrara a los dos hombres allí escondidos.

El levita lo cogió por el brazo y comenzaron a caminar. Si no hubiese sido, por algún que otro grito, aquello hubiera parecido, un día normal en una ciudad como cualquier otra. Un sol que no quemaba mucho, y la brisa que venía del océano distante tornando, la temperatura agradable, las calles polvorientas, las casas hechas de barro mezclado con paja.

—-Nuestras almas están presas por el terror a la muerte, pero el día está hermoso —-observó el levita—-. Muchas veces, cuando yo me sentía en paz con Dios y con el mundo, la temperatura era insoportable, el viento, del desierto Ilenaba de arena mis ojos y no me dejaba ver ni un palmo delante, de mí No siempre los planes del Señor concuerdan. con el lugar donde estamos o con lo que en ese momento sentimos, pero te garantizo que Él tiene una razón para todo, esto.

—-Admiro tu fe.

El levita miró hacia el cielo, como si reflexionase un poco. Después se giró hacia Elías.

—-Eres un profeta —-contestó Elias—-, también oyes voces y sabes que hay un mundo más allá de éste.

—-Puede ser mi imaginación.

Tú ya viste las señales de Dios —-insistió Elias, comenzando a preocuparse con los comentarios de su compañero.

—-Puede ser mi imaginación —-fue de nuevo la respuesta—-. En realidad, la única cosa que tengo en concreto a mi favor es mi apuesta: me dije a mí mismo que todo esto venía del Altísimo.

La calle estaba desierta. Las personas, dentro de sus casas, aguardaban a que los soldados de Ajab completasen la tarea que la princesa extranjera habla exigido: ejecutar a los profetas de Israel. Elias caminaba con el levita, con la sensación de que detrás de cada una de aquellas ventanas y puertas, alguien lo observaba y lo culpaba por lo que estaba sucediendo.
