Overview

Tango purists don't like folks mucking about with the music -- innovator Astor Piazzolla was famously branded the "tango assassin" as he dragged the pride of Argentina into the 20th century. So it's unlikely that French trip-hop trio the Gotan Project will find much love in the dance halls of Buenos Aires. But porteño clubs and lounges should be a different story, for the bandoneon-infused beats of La Revancha del Tango have already scored one international hit, the aching "Tríptico," included here. Nine more tracks evoke the sensuality and mystery of the dance without actually aspiring to the form -- hip-hop beats and samples are the order of the day, the easier to segue from one smoky mood to another. Evocative percussion -- the noir-ish sounds of jingling keys and creepy thumps -- rumbles under the sighing bandoneon and brooding double bass, conjuring dark alleyways and red lanterns. Vocalist Cristina Vilallonga brings a throaty Spanish croon to a few tracks, which include Gotan reworkings of Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango in Paris" theme, Piazzolla's "Vuelvo al Sur," and surprisingly, Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge." Whether their dub-heavy interpretation is actually an evolution of the tango or a fashionable excursis is not quite the point; clearly, this is ambient music designed for listeners with their feet up. Denizens of the Buddha Bar and its numerous competitiors will welcome this new Argentine-themed sonic destination.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Mario Mesquita Borges
An unrivaled collection of themes representing a unique fusion amid traditional forms of music and the nouvelle field of electronica, Gotan Project's La Revancha del Tango discloses unknown frontiers for the modern beat explorers. Inspired by Argentinean tango, Philippe Cohen Solal and Christoph H. Muller, responsible for projects such as Boys From Brazil or Stereo Action Unlimited, united their efforts with Eduardo Makaroff to record what ultimately became a daring musical piece. Mixing styles like dub and downbeat, and enrolling the talents of Argentinean musicians like Gustavo Beytelmann and Nini Flores, the founding trio of Gotan Project managed to deliver a unique debut album. "Tríptico," "Santa Maria (Del Buen Aire)," and "El Capitalismo Foraneo," are just three of the themes revealing the trio's compositional intuition, manipulating the romanticism and dark inspiration of Argentinean illustrative street music with novel electronica. Operating with instruments like the bandoneon, along with modern percussion, Gotan implements an exclusive creative challenge. "Vuelvo Ar Sur," an Astor Piazzolla original composition vocalized by Cristina Villalonga, closes this unequaled set of melodies, confirming Gotan's sole extent of melody exploration.
Rolling Stone Online - Lily Moayeri
The title of the album translates to "tango's revenge," and revenge they take, with a gypsy aesthetic and a sassy flair.
