This translated version of Death Wind is the story of a teenage girl named Allie who is having a terrible time getting her act together. Her grades have suffered since she met Jack; she thinks she might be pregnant and her parents are constantly arguing about her. She's lying in bed early one morning and her parents are already arguing. Staring at the suspension notice she received from school and the date on the calendar reminding her that she'd missed her period, Allie feels overwhelmed. She can't stand the thought that her new predicament will just start a new round of fights so she decides to just run away. A series of ordinary events forces Allie to come home. On the way back, a tornado rocks the truck she is traveling in and flattens her house. The fear that fills her when she sees her demolished house makes her understand how much she loves her parents. By the end of the book Allie's perspective has changed and her parents realize that they could lighten up a bit. They decide, inspired by the town's rebuilding after the tornado, that together they can rebuild their family. The pattern is the same as all of the other "'Orca Soundings" books: parents who don't understand their teen, teen is in trouble but the parents are not to be trusted; then one catastrophic event occurs and suddenly all is right in the world. More sophisticated teens might be drawn to one or two of these books but will soon recognize the formula and desire characters with more depth and will also resent that many teens in these books is portrayed as angry, difficult and selfish.
