Laboratory Management addresses common issues and errors seen in the laboratory management process. The goal is to enable the laboratory manager to avoid or correct such errors by both individual effort and a systems approach in the laboratory. The book addresses potential issues in accreditation and regulatory compliance, laboratory and patient safety, quality management, financial management, human resources management, specimen processing logistics, performance standards, selection and management of commercial laboratories and much more. Each of these can have an adverse impact on the laboratory performance if a management error occurs. Description: Part of the Diagnostic Standards of Care series, this 94-page paperback teaches laboratory management through case studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide learning opportunities through case studies in the diverse areas of laboratory management.
Audience: It is intended for anyone interested in laboratory management. Those benefitting most would be laboratory medicine or pathology residents, fellows or in practice. It also would be useful to non-medically trained personnel interested in laboratory management - such as those with MBAs, like the author.
Features: This is a pretty interesting book written from an MBA perspective, which is uncommon for the typical laboratory medicine book. The case study approach remains a very effective teaching tool. Each of the 12 sections focuses on key laboratory management areas (i.e., regulatory, safety, personnel, revenue, etc.). The case studies are informative and enlightening, identifying many teaching points not routinely covered in laboratory management residency training. The chapter on competitive performance in the outreach market would be especially eye-opening for hospital-based laboratory medicine practitioners. This book can easily be read in one sitting and would be a great introductory book upon which to reflect throughout one's career. In my first perusal, I stumbled upon two significant errors (page 1 - CLIA '88, the "A" is referred to as "Act" when it is *Amendments*; p.33 - "...HIV testing in conjunction with Pap smear", HIV should have been HPV), suggesting inadequate proof-reading.
Assessment: This is a useful quick-read book for an introduction to laboratory management. The case study approach is very effective.
