Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Candace L. Hennessy(Marquette University College of Nursing)
Description: This book presents relevant information needed by a registered nurse to meet the needs of clients undergoing laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures. The inclusion of possible nursing diagnoses in each chapter is unique and facilitates the planning of care. This fourth edition includes updated tests and procedures.
Purpose: The purpose is to make nurses think more about this topic. Critical thinking in this area is important. The book is unique and exceptionally well done. The use of possible nursing diagnoses should facilitate the prioritization of nursing care.
Audience: This book is intended for academic and clinical settings, both undergraduate and graduate students and RNs. The tests and procedures are comprehensive. The examples include clients across the life span from a variety of clinical settings.
Features: The illustrations and tables that are included are clear and appropriate. There are not many illustrations but I am not certain that I could think of any glaring omissions. A section of case studies is included to facilitate the practice of interpreting lab data to formulate nursing diagnoses. The content is well done.
Assessment: The new edition has increased the use of research literature and is obviously more current. I believe it meets a need by filling a void that I see relevant to the understanding of lab tests and diagnostic procedures. This in turn affects the quality of patient teaching and care.
