Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Labradoodle: A Cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, is part of the new "Designer Dogs" series of picture books for children interested in learning more about these popular cross -bred dogs: "...a dog you may not know at the local dog park...What is this bubbly dog turning heads around town? It's a Labradoodle." These lines are taken from the "Designer Doodles" chapter. Initially, crosses between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles were done by assistance dog centers to provide visually or hearing impaired people, or the disabled, with a low-shedding assistance dog. Because Designer Dogs are not purebred, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, however, according to this book there are registration groups including the International Labradoodle Association, Australian Labradoodle Association of America and others. The message presented in this Designer Dogs series is that breeders believe they are creating dogs that are easier to care for (most have little or no shedding) and are more easily trained than their parent breeds, however, they state that grooming and training are very important for their care, and also list a variety of health problems that occur in *both* of the original breeds. Chapters include "Meet the Parents" in which it is noted that it is uncertain if a Labradoodle will have the best or the worst behavior or health of each of its crossed breeds. The "Beauty and Brains" chapter explains why the Labradoodle is one of the most popular hybrids citing their sociability and intelligence. The breed's variations in size, from fourteen to twenty-four inches, and coats: hair coat, fleece coat, and wool coat, are covered in this well-illustrated chapter. "Doodle Do's and Don't's" is a highly informative ten-page chapter in which parents and children can determine whether or not the Labradoodle is the right breed for their family and includes a quiz. The six word "Glossary" repeats those words highlighted and defined in the text. The "Read More" section and "Internet Sites" paragraph offer opportunities for further study and research and may require assistance. Labradoodle is written in consultation with Tanya Dewey, PhD of the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology. Additional "super-cool stuff!" including projects and games are available at www.capstonekids.com Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
