Overview

The fifth edition of this popular collection of fifty-one anatomical case studies, now co-authored by an anatomist and general surgeon, covers all the major regions of the body: head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis and perineum, and limbs. Each case study includes the patient's history, physical exam results, diagnosis, therapy, and a discussion of the findings from the anatomical viewpoint. The discussion becomes the heart of each case by skillfully evolving the logic required to make a diagnosis and prescribe therapy. The cases are ably designed to encourage critical thinking and problem solving.

The clarity of Lachman's well-known writing style has been preserved throughout the book. Nineteen new cases including three covering "developmental embryology" have been added to the text and all other chapters have been updated to reflect the newest diagnostic procedures and current therapies. Twenty-five new radiographic figures, including MRI studies, have been added. This edition also offers review questions and answers at end of each section.

About the Author

Dr. Seiden has been a medical educator for his entire career. He has taught human gross anatomy and embryology for over forty years. He directed the course in Gross and Developmental Anatomy at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School for 20 years. For over 20 years, he also has taught extensively in courses in preparation for the USMLE Step 1 examination. Dr. Corbett is Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Description: This is the fifth edition of the renowned collection of clinical case studies initially published by Ernest Lachman in 1964. It has been significantly modernized from the fourth edition from 1997.
Purpose: The best way for medical students to learn anatomy is to combine the knowledge of anatomical information with its application to clinical medicine. This book aims to do just that by masterfully employing anatomical reasoning and the use of anatomical principles in the presentation, explanation, and design of treatments of clinical case studies.
Audience: Medical students throughout the all four years of medical school will find this book extremely useful, and residents will benefit from this book in their review studies. Other medical professionals with an interest in anatomy will find this book fascinating.
Features: The book presents 51 clinical cases grouped into seven units, based on different anatomical body regions. Each case starts with a clinical presentation, followed by diagnosis and treatment, and then a discussion relevant to the case anatomy. Nineteen of the cases are completely new; the remaining cases have been revised and modernized to fit the standard format that students can use in clinical training. The scope of the book was expanded to include embryological development, and three new cases consider developmental abnormalities. Many figures and diagnostic images, including radiographs, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance images, help to illustrate underlying anatomical problems. However, it is advisable to use a good anatomy atlas while reading this book. A helpful feature is the addition of anatomy review questions with answers at the end of each unit.
Assessment: This is an updated, modernized, and expanded new edition of a great classic published for the first time almost 50 years ago. It is well written and easy to follow without compromising its sound anatomical knowledge. Reading this book should strengthen medical students' motivation for learning anatomy and satisfy their interest in clinical medicine.
