Lach's Antihoot: Scenes From the Fort at Sidewalk Cafe [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
If you visited New York's East Greenwich Village in the '90s and wanted to hear some talented unknowns, one of the places to visit was the Sidewalk Café. Because Lach did the booking, the Sidewalk was best known for anti-folk and singer/songwriters -- although Lach also booked everything from jazz to the occasional country act. Anti-folk, however, is the main focus of this 1996 CD, which contains performances by over a dozen unknowns (unknown in 1996, anyway) at the Sidewalk. Not all of the performances are great, but most of them are fairly memorable. The CD's most impressive numbers include Mr. Scarecrow's "Bill's Song," the Humans' "Hypocrite," Jen's Revenge's "This ...

Not all of the performances are great, but most of them are fairly memorable. The CD's most impressive numbers include Mr. Scarecrow's "Bill's Song," the Humans' "Hypocrite," Jen's Revenge's "This Sucks," and Lach's own "Drinking Beers with Mom," all of which capture the irreverent spirit of anti-folk. Also noteworthy is Animal Head's dark-humored "Mr. Good Attitude," which describes a seemingly good-natured guy who loses it and decides to start shooting people at random. Though Zane Campbell's "Fucked Up on Jesus" is more country than folk, the song's humorous jab at organized religion makes it a perfect choice for Lach's Antihoot -- which, despite its imperfections and despite being slightly uneven, serves as an important document of New York's anti-folk scene of the '90s.
