Children's Literature - John D. OrsbornOriginally a Native American game, lacrosse has endured for many years, but most recently has seen a growth throughout the country. Author John Crossingham's book is both timely and informative. A volume of the "Sport in Action," series, Mr. Crossingham creates a magnificent balance between description and illustration. Numerous photographs and illustrations show the complexity of this sport. Both boys and girls participate in this fast-paced and somewhat aggressive sport. Illustrations of the fields and player position provide enough for younger players to understand the rules and movements within the field of play. Due to the differences between how boys' lacrosse and girls' lacrosse is played, the author gives solid coverage to both. Instead of focusing on the action of the sport, Crossingham focuses on the numerous skills needed for solid play. This allows the reader a better learning experience for actual participation rather than just passive reading about an exciting sport. As with all other books in the series there are further study resources and a glossary, making this an excellent addition to any school or public library.
