More About This Book

Overview

Lad, a courageous and dignified 80-pound collie, lived in The Place. The Place was thick with woods, abounding with squirrels to chase, and a cool lake in which to plunge — a beautiful kingdom — and Lad was its undisputed king. Lad's loyalty to his chosen Master and Mistress knew no bounds. The stories in this book are all about Lad. Some will make you laugh out loud, some will make you cry. And when the book comes to its conclusion, you will know one thing for sure — that Lad was a dog with a soul . . .

Recounts the heroic and adventurous life of a thoroughbred collie that was particularly devoted to his owners.

    Wonderful, Wonderful Books

I read most of the Terhune books about the colllies when I was a kid. I remember finding them in the school library. I read every one of them and now I want to share these with my grand daughter. I think that Bruce was my favorite, but I loved them all. They are wonderful books for children (and adults) that show that the world, indeed, can be a beautiful safe place where love is the norm.

Book with a Soul can't go out of Style

This is a story that maybe has gone out of fashion. It was written for children of a time in which the nightly news did not recount over and over again the horrors of the day, or in which innocence was treated as ignorance. However, this book, like it's hero Laddie, has a soul, one that cannot be undermined by the passing of an unsullied age. If your looking for something to lift you out of the generally depressing smog of modern culture, this is the book you and your children need. Lad's bravery, loyalty and canine honesty are a powerful reminder to kids of what traits should be admired in a hero. Although he may have gone out of style, Lad will never go out of the hearts and minds of those wishing for a more innocent age.

    Thoroughbred in body and soul...

That is Lad, a beautiful collie who's courageous and loving heart make him special. This book follows the exciting and true life of a collie, how he also can feel pain, joy, anger, everything we feel we think animals have no clue of. Lad mourns the sickness of his Mistress, fends off a rattlesnake to defend a small child, and in the end proves to be the king of the Place, no matter what age may have done. Interestingly enough, in a preface to another Terhune book, it states that many collies in the US now were descended from Sunnybank collies, particulary Gray Dawn, but Lad has absolutely no more descendants; his mate died, and he had only one surving son who had no surviving litter of his own.

YOU HAVE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK! ITS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

READ IT! READ IT! READ IT! It is just soooo awesome!!!!!!!!!! It's a thousand times better than Lassie!!!! It's about a fantastic collie dog named Lad and his friends, enemies, adventures, and perils. What happens when Lad encounters a poisonous snake? Or when Lad is lost in the streets of New York? OR WHEN LAD GOES TO OUTER SPACE TO FIGHT GIANT ALIENS!!!!!!! OK, not really... but it doesn't need aliens to make it good. It's my all-time favorite and I recommend it for EVERYONE. I'm surprised they haven't made a movie yet...hmmmmmmm.

    Excellent, excellent, excellent!

This was an unbelievable book and very possibly one of the best I have ever read. Terhune's brilliant interpretation of the mind of this incredible dog, Lad, allows you to get inside the dog's mind and understand the way Lad thinks. The book portrays an unbreakable bond between a magnificent dog and his master.

    A real classic!

I enjoyed all the 'Lad' books as a child. My mother had read them as a girl, too! These are books that both parents and children can enjoy together or separately. They are not too 'mature' for a child or too 'childish' for an adult to enjoy.

    Wonderful Book-and Amazingly, True!

This book was wonderful. When my mom pulled the book off the library shelf, I thought, 'Okay...' I was a bit leery at first, but after reading about two pages, I fell totally in love with Lad, Lady, and all the Sunnybank collies. This book of true stories will make even the biggest dog hater think that dogs are one of the most intelligent species. This is a must read for any dog lover-but don't read the Hello Reader edition. It totally mutates the stories.

I had a stuffed collie dog that I named Lad after reading this book. A year after recieving it my parents finally let me get a real collie. Named him , LAD. sable and white as in the book. He was a wonderful dog lived to be 18 and was my best friend. Now I am giving this book to my grand daughter Emma for her 10th birthday. I know she will love it!
