Ladonna Harrisby Michael Schwartz
LaDonna Harris has dedicated her life to persuading the government to change laws in the United States that are discriminatory against Native Americans. She made important strides with the help of her husband Fred Harris, who served as state senator in Oklahoma for several years. In 1960 LaDonna gathered over 60 Native American tribes together to form Oklahomans for Indian Opportunity (OIO), and in 1970 she founded Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO). More recently, she was appointed to the Institute of American Indian Arts Board by President Bill Clinton.
