The lovely and enchanting Lucy Graham has married Sir Michael Audley and is living at Audley Court, a very old and mystical place with hidden passage ways and forgotten hideaways.
Lucy is beloved by all in the village but is a new arrival in village standards. She is almost an angel with her kind demeanor and beautiful blonde looks. She draws the attention of Sir Michael by accident, as it was never her intention to marry. She is the governess for the village doctor, Mr. Dawson and before that, she came from a school with little known where she was a teacher, as a contact, Mrs. Vincent notes. Her parents seemed dead as she described so she does not have a sole in the world.
She is dotted on by the Dawson family who practically arrange the marriage if not downright push Lucy into it.
After the marriage Sir Michael Audley’s nephew, Robert Audley a barrister has a long lost friend return to him from his travels in Australia; George Talboys
George has spent the last three years fortune hunting in Australia.
It is a sad story as George practically abandoned his wife and son to find a better life and fortune in Australia.
Upon his return, he finds his wife is dead and his son is under his father’s care.
George, finding himself without a wife but with a fortune has a breakdown.
Robert cares for George by taking him to his Uncle's country manor to recover. In return, George makes Robert the guardian of his little boy, Georgy.
While Robert and George are at Audley’s court, they seem to note the snub of the new Lady. Lady Lucy Audley always makes a point not to be around when George is about and he actually has never seen her except for a portrait done of her in the house. Robert begins to see this as strange.
Robert Audley begins an investigation of Lucy and finds very disturbing news. When George goes missing, Robert deepens his investigation and the whole mess comes to light - the startling revelation of Lady Audley's Secret.

DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION - This is not the complete book

I purchased this download (not a sample) because several reviews of this title that were free versions contained typo's. After paying $3.99 and reading the first 123 pages I discovered that this is not the complete book. On my Nook it starts with Page 1, Chapter 1, but after checking the actual printed book I discovered that my download was actually starting with Chapter XXXII. Which explains the storyline problems!

No where does it state that this is only a portion of the book in the overview. Total number of pages also are not mentioned anywhere. Customer Service told me there was nothing they could do. No refund. I will have to pay $10.99 now if I want a full version of the book and suggested I select a different version to download.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon is no Jane Austin

When I ordered this book I wasn't aware that this author was popular at about the same time as Jane Austin. I gather she was very popular then, but I found her writing style way too tedious and overly emotive for me to stick with. Way way overly descriptive of emotional content for my taste. I didn't finish reading the book.
