Overview

This was her penultimate album, recorded when her body was telling her enough was enough. During the sessions with arranger Ray Ellis she was drinking vodka neat, as if it were tap water. Yet, for all her ravaged voice (the sweetness had long gone), she was still an incredible singer. The feeling and tension she manages to put into almost every track set this album as one of her finest achievements. "You've Changed" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" are high art performances from the singer who saw life from the bottom upwards. The CD reissue masterminded by Phil Schaap is absolutely indispensable. [Lady in Satin was re-released on LP in 2015.]

A must have LP.

Lady Day's life was the anatomy of sorrow. In this saddest and most emotionally possessed album of her life, it truly portrays the crises of her sad, ailing age and drug problems, which led her to die with a slowly revolving death. Her voice croaks that emotion with a pure feeling that's more than just music. It's her heartbeat. And slowly throughout the record, you could feel her life flickering in the midst of the music that ends with a silent roar.

This is my favorite Billie CD and I am the world's biggest B.H. fan although she died when I was only ten years old! Now that's real devotion! It doesn't get any better than this.

I loved every minute of this cd. You can hear every painful moment in her life through her voice. I'm sure there are many so-called better cds of billie but none so heart wrenching as this one. It makes you love her more.
