Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Greaves Radloff
Fans of the "American Girl" series can continue reading about their favorite American girls with these historical mysteries. Though Jones has written several others stories set in different time periods for the mystery series, this one is set in Colonial Williamsburg just as the American Revolution is beginning. Eleven-year-old Felicity, left in charge of the house when her mother must leave to care for an ailing relative, is confident and proud to have been trusted with the responsibility. In short order, a mysterious package arrives. Inside is a family heirloom: a breathtakingly beautiful toilette set that once belonged to Lady Margaret, who died after giving birth to a baby daughter who also died. The despairing father saw her ghost in the family manse, and again after moving to a new home in the colonies. Add to that a rigged horse race, indentured servants with cruel masters, a hired cook who bullies Felicity, a servant girl whose master makes her steal, and a father whose store is feeling a financial pinch, and you've got a tale that will keep young fans turning the pages. Felicity is capable, though slightly daunted by the cook and puzzled by events that unfold. Still, she manages to rally to the occasion when the chips are down. The historical details are good, the plot well-paced if a bit too pat, and the mystery unfolds subtly as events that can't be explained at first. Young readers should be engaged by the mystery, the ghost, the idea that a girl of Felicity's age should be given responsibility for the house, and our hero's reliance on her own wits to solve her problems. The Perfect Ghost Story

Lady Margaret's ghost written by Elizabeth McDavid Jones is a Felicity Mystery book from the American Girl company. This story takes place in colonial Williamsburg, in the late 1700's. It is Publick Times, a busy time for Williamsburg, a time when many visitors came to Williamsburg and many events took place. The story is about Felicity, a well-known historical American Girl character. Felicity is eleven years-old, and her mother is leaving Williamsburg with Felicity's younger siblings and the family servant. Felicity is left at home with her father and her father's apprentice, Ben. Felcity has to watch the house while her mother is away. But just as sson as her mother, siblings, and the family servant leaves, a package arrives for Felicity's father from Boston. Inside the package are some family heirlooms. The family heirlooms were sent by Felicity's uncle who had died recently. The heirlooms are very valuable, especially the ones belonging to Lady Margaret. Lady Margaret was Felicity's ancestor who had failed to give her husband a child. Margaret had died at an early age, and ever since then, story was that wherever the heirlooms went, the lonely ghost of Lady Margaret followed. Felicity is scared from her father's telling of the ghost story, for she had felt a spark when touching Lady Margaret's belongings. After that, Felicity faces many unexplained happenings, like things gone missing, even the heirlooms. Felicity is worried Lady Margaret's ghost does exist, even though she does not believe in ghosts. Felicity decides to face her fears and investigate whether Lady Margaret's ghost eally is responsible for the unexplained happenings. What Felicity finds is not what she is expects, and if you read the book, it won't be what you expect either! The twists and turns at every point in this story is what makes this story seem so exciting, and sometimes, even so real. I would recommend this book to any girl who loves adventure, American Girl, or solving mysteries. This book definiteley deserves five stars for its astounding story. Hope you enjoy reading this book just as much as I did!!!!!!!!!

    A good read.

I bought this book for my 5 yr old daughter. We take turns reading each paragraph. She is an avid fan of ghost stories and I love Williamsburg so I thought this book would be a good combination for both of us. And it was! We have vacationed in Williamsburg Va so the places were familiar to us; and, it was fun to watch her face as we read about the places we had been. I am not very familiar with the Felicity stories (although I plan to be very soon) but, I think that any fan of the American Girl stories will enjoy this book.
