Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Greaves Radloff
Fans of the "American Girl" series can continue reading about their favorite American girls with these historical mysteries. Though Jones has written several others stories set in different time periods for the mystery series, this one is set in Colonial Williamsburg just as the American Revolution is beginning. Eleven-year-old Felicity, left in charge of the house when her mother must leave to care for an ailing relative, is confident and proud to have been trusted with the responsibility. In short order, a mysterious package arrives. Inside is a family heirloom: a breathtakingly beautiful toilette set that once belonged to Lady Margaret, who died after giving birth to a baby daughter who also died. The despairing father saw her ghost in the family manse, and again after moving to a new home in the colonies. Add to that a rigged horse race, indentured servants with cruel masters, a hired cook who bullies Felicity, a servant girl whose master makes her steal, and a father whose store is feeling a financial pinch, and you've got a tale that will keep young fans turning the pages. Felicity is capable, though slightly daunted by the cook and puzzled by events that unfold. Still, she manages to rally to the occasion when the chips are down. The historical details are good, the plot well-paced if a bit too pat, and the mystery unfolds subtly as events that can't be explained at first. Young readers should be engaged by the mystery, the ghost, the idea that a girl of Felicity's age should be given responsibility for the house, and our hero's reliance on her own wits to solve her problems.
