Having this volume at hand will make it far easier to distinguish what is known from what is necessarily speculation about Lady Mary's life. —London Review of Books

London Review of Books
Janice Farrar Thaddeus
Although the plethora of facts occasionally blunts Grundy's purpose, her book renders with refreshing subtlety Montagu's freewheeling and various mind, presenting with capacious sensitivity her literary relationships, her fearless prose, her complex encounters with politics, love, marriage and family life. Grundy does not fail to mention Montagu's many friendships with such women as Mary Astell, Maria Skerrett and Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. Montagu was confident that women were her equals and that they mattered. Though predating the word "feminist," she certainly was one, and this biography—unlike its predecessor—remains always true to that interpretation of her life, adding important detail throughout, and facing critical controversy with unfailing balance.
The Women's Review of Books
From the Publisher

"The work that has gone into this biography is impressive....Grundy's mass of well-arranged information inspires confidence....The Lady Mary that we get to know here is...a brilliant one."--Times Literary Supplement
