Overview

This exclusive B&N edition includes a guide to Emma's Los Angeles, in which Cassandra Clare takes readers through the landmarks—both real and fantastical—of Shadowhunter LA.

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare's newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It's been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn't lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian's brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters' help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn't recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare's Dark Artifices series.

I have waited for this book to come out since the final mortal instruments installment was released, and it did not disappoint. I fell in love with the characters and the storyline just as I did in TMI. I loved seeing the characters from the other books a part of Julian and Emma's story. I look forward to the next book.

More representation; a confirmed bisexual character, a nicely written autistic character, and more people of color. Interesting concepts; ableism in Shadowhunter society, falling in love with your Parabatai, and the things people are willing to do for love. Lovely characters; many of them are easily liked and relatable. But, it's a tad drawn out and the writing is sort of confusing at times. I feel like the Mortal Instruments characters got a bit too much attention. I also am disappointed she didn't include any dialogue from Helen and Aline. I'll admit the forbidden love trope is a little tiring, but this isn't too badly written.

This book was amazing. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.

This is a well written story of forbidden love, familial responsibility, and magic. The characters are well developed and easily become people you care about. Some parts move slowly, but overall, this book delivers everything I'm looking for in a novel. My only complaint is having to wonder how long I'll have to wait for the next installment in the story.

I have read all the Shadow Hunter books from #1 - to Marks return to the family & the institute . Kit Heron dales discovery of being a Shadow Hunter. I,Gordon Joslin, am an avid reader at 70 years young. As long as I can read my Nook books, my mind will stay active as I visualize the stories, plots, settings, and characters family, wizards, fairies & weaponry, runes, iratz.

I absolutely loved this book. It lives up to the reputation of both the Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices. Personally, it was a bit drawn out in the beginning, but the humor and action made up for it. I adored the ending, and am already anticipating the next book.

A wonderfully written book about frienship, unforbidden love, and family. If you've not read "The Mortal Instruments" or "The Infernal Devices" it is suggested and will make this book even more exciting to read.

I've been reading cassie's books since i was a young teen and here I am 21 and falling in love with this new series just as much as I did TMI and DA. I read this book in only a few days and I need the next one. It had such wonderful twists and turns and the characters are beautifully flushed out. The only possible con to this book is the over-mentioning of Jace and Clary. I understand she wanted to tie it to TMI but there was perhaps too much inclusion of them in a series that isn't theirs. Overall I love this book so much! 100% Recommended.

Cassandra Clare has done it again. Lady Midnight was breathtaking, heartbreaking, hysterical, and a bunch of other emotions through the roller coaster that is a Cassandra Clare book. I could not put Lady Midnight down. I was entrapped by it. I was sucked into the world of the Los Angeles Institute as I learned about the Blackthorns. As per usual with Clare’s books, the story was a roller coaster. Not a cute little one for a child, no. A full blown “I’m going to die” roller coaster. There seemed to be no down time in this book. Lady Midnight was full of twists, turns, loops-di-loops, and constant screaming. I cannot count how many times my heart broke and repaired itself in the course of this 680 page book. I felt so bi-polar reading this. I couldn’t keep my feelings straight. One page I was close to tears and a few later I was laughing my butt off. I have seriously missed Clare’s writing. I have read every single one of her books and I didn’t feel like this was a repeat of those stories. Lady Midnight had its own plot that didn’t match any of the other books. Clare showed a different side to the Shadowhunter world than we have seen before. No spoilers, but holy crap. I was not expecting certain things to happen and when they did, I was blown away. Emma Carstairs is a badass and I want to be her. I have so much respect for Emma after Lady Midnight. We knew she was tough from The Mortal Instruments where she made a small appearance, but we never knew how tough. The things Emma must face are not easy yet she strides through them with a brave face and doesn’t stop fighting. Clare always writes strong female characters, but Emma was the next level. She didn’t shy away from a battle and I couldn’t help myself from loving her. If I could be close to the level of badass that is Emma, I would be happy. (I never will though, I’d rather read than fight.) I don’t know how I feel about Julian. He would do anything for his family, which is amazing. He is strong in his own way, but he is also twisted. Becoming responsible for four kids at the age of 12 is too much for any kid. Julian never complained, never stopped, and was the parent these kids needed. But it warped him. He has a dark side and it’s slightly scary. He doesn’t stop fighting for the ones he loves, even if it means putting innocents in harm’s way. I don’t know if I trust Julian anymore. Which is very unfortunate, because I want too. I want to believe in him and be proud of him. I don’t think it’s possible for me anymore. Quick rundown of some of the other characters: Mark is awesome. His uncomfortableness with human customs is adorable but also sad. My heart broke for him many many times. Ty is someone I would want as my friend. He is so intelligent. All I want to do is squish him in a hug and never let him go or get hurt. Livvy… Just don’t mess with Ty. She is fiercely protective of her twin and I respect her so much. Cristina is amazing. She is the polished type of Shadowhunter who is just all sorts of awesome. I want to be Cristina. Dru is someone I would not mess with. She’s into horror and dark things like that, I couldn’t deal with it. Malcom is forgetful and slightly eccentric. But nowhere near close to Magnus. Lady Midnight kept my attention through an airplane ride and my roommate screaming at someone which is very hard to ignore. If you want to escape for a little while, then Lady Midnight is the book for you.

Captivating! Love this series

The book was wonderful and well written. I can't wait to read the second book! So many fangirl moments reading this....I LOVE IT. There were parts that made me want to cry and parts that cracked me up. A first book in a series usually doesn't get me too attached to the characters but I love each and every single one of them. The characters have their own little back story and mystery to it which makes it much more interesting! The plot twist in the end almost made me cry and chuck the book across my room but it was still wonderful to read. I LOVE HOW SOME CHARACTERS WERE BROUGHT BACK INTO THE SERIES! They didn't over shadow the new and main characters which was perfect. EVERYBODY GO READ IT. BUT READ ALL OF CASSANDRA'S BOOK FIRST OR YOU'LL MISS OUT ON THE FEELS AND EMOTIONAL HEART ACHE. BTW READ THEM BY THEIR PUBLICATION DATE TO AVOID SPOILERS AND SUCH OKAY BYE

The book really takes some time to start up. It wasn't until pages 250 - 310 that it started getting more interesting. I didnt like all the detailed and repetitive writing about the siblings and how Julian raised them and how special each of them are. I wanted something a little more fast paced and dark. I do like Emma and I really think the series will go well. I think it just needs some more mature or serious content like in her other two series.

Great story. I couldn't put it down.

The characters are so lovable. Story is compelling. I liked the older, more mature characters in this book vs Clare's Mortal Instruments series. I still like the Infernal Devices trilogy the best. Clare is the master of unexpected plot twists!
