    An Outstanding Historical Novel

    Welcome to ancient Egypt, and the treachery of its sophisticated court. The story of beautiful blue-eyed Thu, raised from peasant to powerful courtesan, will hold the rapt attention of anyone who loves fine historical fiction. I literally could not put this book down during the last 100 pages, and it was not easy before that! Intrigue, betrayal, the ascent to power and the dizzying drop from it - all combine to make this a top-notch historical thriller.

    Life in a Pharaoh's Harem

    I really enjoy all of Pauline Gedge's historical fiction. She is by far the best at making this time period come alive. In this fictional story a young peasant girl lives out the My Fair Lady story. She is remade completely and on purpose by a man who has complex reasons for needing to place an intelligent young girl at pharaoh's side, a girl loyal to her benefactor first and who will do his bidding. The plot is complex, but the insight of the harem life is fascintaing---boring, boring, boring, and occasionally spiced with intrigue and death. (An aside: some have remarked negatively on Thu's blue eyes, but it is explained by author by having her father be a mercenary soldier from a foreign land. She needed to be unusual looking so that she would stand out among other young girls and appeal to jaded pharaoh.'
