Children's Literature - Phyllis KennemerReaders are invited to press a large button on the title page to start the Laff-O-Tronic Joke Machine. An FYI at the bottom of the page informs these readers that buttons don’t work in books. Turn the page. Most of the jokes in the first section depend on various forms of word play, such as “What do you call a pig who knows karate? A pork chop!” and sections of word play jokes appear throughout the book. Sports Names follow. “What do you call a girl who’s good at fishing? Annette.” The Hinky Pinkies section has questions with rhyming answers: “What do you call a soccer player made of Swiss cheese? A Holey Goalie.” Sports Clichés feature humorous illustrations for well-known sports sayings. Readers can get a sense of motion in the Flippin’ Out section. They are instructed grab a page and flip it back and forth to see the action. Directions for drawing a football helmet appear in the back. The active black and white illustrations are an integral part of the humor. Sure to be a hit with young sports enthusiasts. This book is part of the “Laff-O-Tronic” series.
