Since moving to New Orleans, Deveraux Parker has had a hard time fitting in and finding friends. To make matters worse, he's been having weird dreams about being on a pirate ship in search of treasure. When Deveraux makes friends with Sam, the two decide to go on an adventure and look for the treasure Deveraux has been dreaming about. Finding a treasure map in a black box in an abandoned mansion in town, the two set out on the biggest hunt of their lives. Someone, however, seems to be following them - and may not want them finding the treasure. Will Deveraux and Sam find the treasure, or is there a worse danger lurking that they need to be wary of? A great adventure for mystery lovers. Although it is sometimes difficult to follow the changes between Deveraux's past, present, and dreams, the story does a great job of keeping the reader interested. The plot is well-developed, and the characters are well-created. Adventure junkies, treasure hunters, fans of pirates, and mystery lovers will enjoy reading LAFITTE'S BLACK BOX.

Lafitte's Black Box is a well written chapter book full of Colonial New Orleans history with pirate intrigue as well as modern day action in a teenage boys life full of the angst that many tweens experience. Jake Webber seamlessly transitions from past to present; dream to reality in his tale of a quest to unravel a mystery two centuries old. Pirate ships, hidden treasure, cryptic clues, secrets and puzzles fill this page turner. There are emotional highs and lows but mostly a supense driven story accented with Old South history. There are many historical references to Natchez, MS as well as the great city of New Orleans. The author takes us on an exciting journey full of history to educate young adults in a fun, suspenseful and engaging adventure. This fantastic book will you leave you anticipating Jake Webber's action packed sequel. Though you may think your quest for the burried treasure is at an end, the answer to Lefitte's Black Box still remains in question.
