Overview

The beautiful Isobel of Aberlady is coveted by many men for the power of her prophetic visions. Isobel's father has kept her isolated at Aberlady Castle for this very reason. But when he is taken prisoner in battle, Isobel must rely on her own resources to protect her besieged castle and its people.

Just when all hope seems lost, James Lindsay, Scottish knight turned outlaw, scales the high castle walls to save her. Isobel obeys the counsel of her guards and escapes with James, certain he will deliver her safely to her betrothed, Sir Ralph Leslie.

But James has other plans, plans that go even further awry when the hardened warrior finds the lure of the gentle lady more than he can deny.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Branded an outlaw and a murderer by Black Isobel's prophecies, James Lindsay sets out to kidnap the seeress and use her to barter for his cousin Margaret's freedom; but the gentle, beautiful Isobel is not the evil hag he had expected, and Jamie finds that letting her go is far more difficult than capturing her had been. King spins a complex, mesmerizing story of betrayal, retribution, and healing that weaves intricate details of falconry and politics with a lyrical, compelling love story that will appeal to readers who identify with Scotland's struggle for independence, in particular the period just following the death of William Wallace in 1305. King's (Lady Miracle, Topaz, 1997) exquisitely vivid descriptions are beautiful bonuses. King lives in Damascus, MD.

    tugs at your heart

This book is wonderful!! The historical facts are accurate and very interesting. Susan King writes with a depth of feeling for her characters that is compelling- James is a hero any women would look to for love, warmth, protection and honor. Susan King is remarkable. I have since bought all her books- even to find the ones that are out of print.

    Great Story...but..

This story caught my attention from the first page. It had a great story line. Then it suddenly got bogged down with too much talk about training birds. Too bad...

    Outstanding...

Very few male heros leave a lasting impression, but Jamie Lindsay sure did! He was perfect. Although a little light on love scenes, I didn't mind because the sweet romance between Jamie and Isobel was blatant. A great, interesting story.
