Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This very informative nonfiction book about Lake Huron begins with a description of the storms of November 1913 during which many ships sank. The creation of the lake thousands of years ago is described in chapter two followed by a brief description of Lake Huron's islands. Also discussed in the book are the people living along Lake Huron, including the Indians, explorers, and voyageurs. Trade and industry as well as ecological issues surrounding the Lake are included in the book's topics. The book concludes with information on Lake Huron today, including a discussion of tourism. An age-appropriate, hands-on map exercise is integrated which highlights the geography surrounding the Great Lakes. Text features include a glossary, related Internet sites, titles of other books on the same topic, fast facts, a table of contents, and an index. The illustrations are beautifully drawn pictures as well as color and black and white photographs. For information on the other Great Lakes, the other books in this series, "Land and Water" are great choices. This title would be a nice addition to a collection in the geography section. 2004, Fact Finders/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
