Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This excellent nonfiction book about Lake Michigan is very comprehensive. The elementary aged reader will be fascinated to learn that Lake Michigan is the sixth largest lake in the world and that Lake Michigan actually divides the state of Michigan into two peninsulas. Early dwellers along Lake Michigan included Native American tribes such as the Ottawa, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi and European explorers. Midwesterners will love learning about the role the lake played in the development of the city of Chicago. Another topic of particular interest is the discussion of the deadly sea lampreys which inhabited Lake Michigan. An age-appropriate, hands-on game demonstrates the relationship the sea lamprey has had on the other fish in the Great Lakes. Finally, information about present day Lake Michigan is presented. A nice feature is a fast facts page that provides "facts at a glance." Text features include a glossary, related Internet sites, titles of other books on the same topic, a table of contents, and an index. The illustrations are beautifully drawn pictures as well as color and black and white photographs. For information on the other Great Lakes, the other books in this series, "Land and Water" are great choices. This title would be a nice addition to a collection on the topic of North American geography. 2004, Fact Finders/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
