Overview

If you've ever marveled at the simple elegance of a weather-worn gazebo resting in a small-town America park, or sat down in a Main-Street diner and felt right at home with the locals, then you'll know the warm feelings and hidden charms found in Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon Days.

Celebrating the quirks and idiosyncrasies of small-town America, part town history, part family remembrance, Lake Wobegon Days is imbued with a sly humor that picks at the silliness and the earnestness that are woven so tightly together in a small town. With acute observations we meet all kinds of characters: a family so destitute they had a vacuum cleaner with such poor suction that hairballs had to be stuffed into it, and who believed that "air-conditioning" was for the weak and indolent." We also meet Pete Peterson, the duck-hunter's duck-hunter, who shot ducks from bed! The portraits are varied: warm and funny, honest and revealing. The state of Minnesota, where the fictitious Lake Wobegon exists, is nicknamed the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" and you'll be glad to lounge beside this one for a spell.

A portrait of small-town American life emerges in a novel of humor, sadness and tenderness, songs and poems.

Editorial Reviews

Veronica Geng
''Lake Wobegon Days'' is about the way our beliefs, desires and fears tail off into abstractions - and get renewed from time to time. . . this book, unfolding Mr. Keillor's full design, is a genuine work of American history. -- New York Times

Meet the Author

Garrison Keillor
Garrison Keillor
First with his performances on Minnesota Public Radio's Prairie Home Companion and later in his books, Garrison Keillor has become a symbol of the small-town Midwest -- its absurdities, its stoutness, and its warmth. His popular, funny stories set in Lake Wobegon manage to evoke nostalgia for a town that never existed.

Biography

Garrison Keillor is the author of thirteen books, including Lake Wobegon Summer 1956, Wobegon Boy, and Lake Wobegon Days. From 1999-2001, Keillor wrote a column "Dear Mr. Blue: Advice for Lovers and Writers" on Salon.com. Keillor's popular Saturday-night public radio show, A Prairie Home Companion, is in its twenty-seventh season. He lives in St. Paul with his wife and daughter.

    Great nightstand book

The first couple of chapters were slow going, so much so that the book sat on my nightstand for 3 months after I got through them. But after picking it back up and plowing through the beginning, I became accustomed to the unidentifiable plot and began to truly enjoy this book. If you're from small-town America or anywhere in the Midwest for that matter, you will appreciate this book. I can't count how many times my wife woke up to me snickering or flat out laughing while reading, especially chapters Summer, Fall, & Winter. Great storytelling and well-placed humor. My only struggle is deciding which Keillor book can top this as my next purchase.

    Lake Wobegon Days

Some things are just a sheer pleasure and Keillor's "Lake Wobegon Days" on CD is one of those. We have enjoyed these same stories on cassette years ago and purchased this set for my in-laws for Christmas. Great stuff - good stories - simple, enjoyable and stories that take you back to a time and place when life was really good.

A Novel that Revels in the Peculiarities of Human Nature

While some may feel that Keillor rambles, the truth is that the charm of this book is in the details. Although it is set in a fictionalized rural town, the characters that he brings to life could be from anywhere. Each chapter paints such a vivid picture of Lake Wobegon that the reader feels as if they've been there. And some parts are so funny that you laugh out loud.

    A reviewer

The first chapter was promising, a bit rambling, but a great first chapter told in his voice. The next chapter was incredibly boring and focused on the history of New Albion (which I assume later becomes Lake Wobegon) He wrote endlessly about the settlers, founding a school, so boring. As I flipped through the rest of the book I realized it would all be boring fake history.

    Lake Wobegon

In Lake Wobegon Days, Garrison Keillor is the author and narrator of the book. Parts of the book I could relate to because I live in a small town. Although, I couldn¿t relate to the religion that Keillor¿s family participated in. Keillor writes about a few good situations that happened in his life but most of the time he seems to ramble on.

    Keillor's Classic

Garrison Keillor is the funniest American writer today, and this, his second book, really shows it. Lake Wobegon is a place we can all relate to, live with one another in.Keillor has written a novel that will stay in my heart forever, and that is an achievement.
