Lamentations and Praises: World Premier Recordingby Chanticleer
Lamentations and Praises is a liturgical drama -- a religious theater piece with music, like the medieval Play of Daniel or, closer to our time, Britten's Curlew River. Based on a series of Ikons that are part of the Greek Orthodox church service, Tavener's work is subtle in its theatricality. In fact, it could be said that this is an interior drama and that listening to it conjures up not only visual images but also the smell of incense and the cool, heavy air of an ancient church. It was written expressly for the American all-male a cappella vocal ensemble Chanticleer, and the group had to learn to sing the microtonal inflections featured in the orthodox Byzantine style. Tavener was reportedly so impressed with Chanticleer's performance that he thought they had imported a Greek priest to sing some of the parts. Accompanied by an orchestra of Baroque instruments, a Tibetan temple bowl, and a Byzantine monastery bell, the music sounds at once exotic and timeless. Recording at Skywalker Sound Studios, the engineers have created a marvelous sense of space, allowing for plenty of resonance while varying the acoustics to enhance the drama. Lamentations and Praises is Tavener's most accomplished and moving score since The Protecting Veil.

This is a profound and beautiful CD. Tavener once again is subperb in brining contemporary choral works to a soulful conemplation of the depths of the Golgatha experience. There is great angst, unapologetic tension, and fantastic richness in this work!
AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE 2003 RAVEL: Piano Pieces Eric Himy Ivory - 72009 - 73:50 This is a very appealing interpretation of Ravel! American pianist Eric Himy seems to have captured the essence of the composer of Miroirs. In this collection he underlines Ravel's talents as a colorist and his skill with dynamics. 'Une Barque sur l'Ocean' evokes the tormented atmosphere shot with light of a Turner painting: whereas 'Alborada del Gracioso'is both vivacious and elegant perhaps more from suggestion ( 'Noctuelles' and 'Oiseaux Tristes'), meaning implicitly, while leaving space for the imagination. In Gaspard de la Nuit, Himy maintains the mystery with 'Ondine' and unleashes a wild storm in 'Scarbo'.The unavoidable Pavane for a Dead Princess allows us to appreciate the precision of his style. La Valse, in Himy's arrangement for solo piano, does not have the full sound we are used to in the version for two pianos. But the spirit of the piece is there, brilliant, precise, and ironic, with many little winks of the eye. These interpretations bring immediate pleasure, with a humane character that shines from beginning to end, though rather removed from the Mephistophelean and transcendent reading of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. I have spend a lot money collecting early chanting music. But most of them are catholic style. this is the first time I came across the greek orthodox style. And I am falling in love with it. Even though John Tavener is a modern composer, but he manage to compose like the ancient time, which is really amazing. The greek orthodox chanting make you feel the simple and strong relation between man and God. I stop listening to other chanting music and play this CD over and over again..it is the music that flowing directly from the heaven. Nothing can compare to it, after you listen to it, you will put your gregorian chanting CDs back to the cd shelf, and you will throw the modern Gospel music to the trash can where it belongs. I bought other Tavener's CD, but still, this one is the best. Not to mention the best skywalker recordingstudio, the chanticleer's heavenly voice will make an evil man repent. I give my highst respect to John tavener, he have the talent that I would want to have at any price.
