This bestselling manual—now thoroughly revised and updated—is designed for anyone who wants to chart a course in the wilderness: hiker, backpacker, snowshoer, skier, fisherman, or hunter. Step by step, it teaches the skills that enable you to answer the vital questions: Where am I now? Which way do I head to reach my destination? How far is it? And how long will it take me to get there?
Included here are the basics of interpreting maps and orienting by compass, as well as more advanced techniques for measuring distances and estimating travel times; determining and adjusting for local declination around the globe; using an altimeter to add the dimension of height to one’s position; and navigation by means of sun and stars. In updating the late W. S. Kals’s text, Clyde Soles focuses on the latest developments in technology and equipment, such as digital mapping software and handheld GPS units, and provides an overview of marine navigation for sea kayakers. Visuals include a full-color foldout topographic map for reference and practice, plus dozens of helpful drawings and photographs.

Much better nav books out there now..

Many people get this Sierra Club Guide because of the 'Sierra Club' in the title, but that alone certainly doesn't make it the best navigation text. One early warning is the book layout - a navigation book with small pages and muddy illustrations is not designed to be cracked open and laid flat on the ground while you refer to it while PRACTICING (essential for learning). In reality the Sierra Club book is a very old one, recently updated a bit. It is more like an astronomy text than a practical guide to wilderness navigation on land. It drones on about principles of magnetism etc. when you could be learning practical outdoors navigation instead. After reviewing all of the texts in print out there and teaching the subject to students, I have discovered the Essential Wilderness Navigator is the best complete AND PRACTICAL map & compass land nav book out there. Better illustrations, better photos, easier to comprehend navigation exercises. The Sierra Club Land Navigation Handbook or Bjorn Kjellstrom's vastly overrated 'Be Expert with Map and Compass' pale in comparison. And just so you know, no map & compass book out there adequately covers GPS in a chapter or two - you need the factory manual and ideally a book dedicating to showing you how to use your GPS as a supplement to hard map/compass, preferably by someone knowledgeable about the environment you plan to hike (desert, mountain, arctic, etc.)

    Land Navigation Handbook

One of the better books on basic land navigation. Gives enough detail to get new navigators up to speed quickly, without overwhelming them with minutia. If you need all of the whys and how, buy Bowditch.
